When you’re a photographer and your best friend gets engaged, of course you offer to take some photos. Sam and Rob wanted a city vibe for their engagement photo shoot, and I was happy to oblige since I’m a downtown Toronto photographer. We had such a fun time exploring downtown Toronto and capturing their love in some amazing locations. Here are some favourites!
The first location we chose was none other than my home — my rooftop patio in the Distillery District overlooking the Toronto skyline. The urban vibe contrasted nicely with the garden setting on the patio. Sunlight reflecting off the glass skyscrapers lit up Sam and Rob, illuminating them perfectly against the skyline. Sam looked stunning in her white Zara pantsuit and Rob looked sharp in his black suit. Guess what the wedding colour theme will be? Hint: black and white, but Sam won’t be wearing pants to the wedding.
Although the Distillery itself is beautiful, it’s overrun with people, making photography there difficult. So our second stop nearby was on the grounds of the Berkeley Theatre, across from the Distillery District. It has vintage charm and brick exteriors like the Distillery, minus the crowds and tourists, making it ideal for photos without interruption.
Lastly we walked along Front St, slowly making our way towards Union Station and snapping photos along the way. This is a classic Toronto landmark and we wanted to have some photos that showed pride for the city. The architecture of the station is well known in and around Toronto, and it created a beautiful backdrop for photos. Sam was a trooper, walking extensively all around downtown with a severely injured ankle (cleverly hidden by the pantsuit). As late afternoon turned into dusk and then into night, we continued making photos with nothing more than the city streetlights, narrowly dodging some traffic on Wellington along the way (worth it).
We had a blast and I can’t wait for Sam and Rob’s wedding at The Doctor’s House in Kleinburg next summer.
